MY THIRSTY SOUL
Lord
I am thirsty
So thirsty that
My tongue is swollen and black
My skin is dry
My eyes are bulging
I am thirsty
Wandering about in this ole
Dry land
That has no water
I cast about
Looking for a spring
A well
Something that will
Quench
My
Thirst.
But
I find
NO-thing.
I look about
And I notice
That everyone is
THIRSTY
Drinking from the
Poisoned Wells
Of
Lust
Greed
Power
Addiction
Envy
& Pride…
My God!
Have mercy on us!
Then out of the crowds
I hear a man
Shouting
Shouting
Come to me!
All who are thirsty!
DRINK!
I come running
I don’t know
What it is
About this man
About this voice
But, it summons me
Out of the darkness
And into the light
It refreshes me
Cools me
Quenches my thirst
Even as I stand before him
Face upraised
Mouth open
For the living water
Which will finally
Finally
Quench
My thirst!
Water
That forgives my sin
Water
That makes me whole again
Water
That creeps into
The driest places
Most forgotten places
Most hidden places
Of heart and soul…
And ministers
To me!
As I drink
I feel so full
The waters
Come rushing back out
Pouring
Out of me
Into the lives of others
Waters of love
Waters of joy
Waters of peace
Rolling waters
Rushing waters
Water falls
Pouring into the lives of others
Bringing love and service
And laughter…
Oh, the laughter!
The Spirit
Of God
Rushes into every dry place
And slacks
My
Thirst
Hallelujah!
Amen.
This Spoken Word was inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
John 7:37-39 (NRSV)
The living water of the Spirit
On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

SPIRIT BLOW ALL OVER ME
Gift from Jesus
Advocate with us
Helps us in distress
Never curses only bless
Helps me to express
Jesus’ love with success
Calms me with I’m stressed
Gets me out of all my mess
But, don’t want to digress
Spirit blows….Spirit blows…Spirit blows all over me. (x2)
Couldn’t live without
He makes me so devout
Makes me want to shout
Hallelujah there’s no doubt
He’s Knowledgeable about
Every circumstance doled out
That’s why I cry out
Spirit blows…Spirit blows…Spirit blows all over me.(x2)
There’s no need to be sad
And might I even add
That I’m pretty glad
He returned to his dad
Ascended like he had
For Spirit blows. Spirit blows…Spirit blows all over me. (x2)
Allowing me to share
God’s love and God’s care
Allowing me to bare
My life full of prayer
It’s relationship so rare
To it nothing compares
That’s why I must declare
And tell folks to prepare
So they’re not unaware
That he’s coming with great flair
Over here or over there
So we need to be aware
And never debonair
Causes he’ll appear in the air
When Spirit blows…Spirit blows…Spirit blows all over us.
Spirit blows…Spirit blows…Spirit blows all over us.
Spirit blow…Spirit blow…Spirit blow all over us!
This rhyme was inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
John 16:4-11 (NRSV)
Jesus will send the Advocate
But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.
"I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

Ten Times One Hundred
That God is not like us
For God is faithful
Loyal
True
Forever.
All God asks
Is that we love
God
And neighbor
As ourselves.
All God desires
Is for us to
Believe
That JESUS
Came into the world
To show us love
Died on the cross
Rose again
To prove
God’s love.
All God wants
Is children
Who will trust
That God will
Make things right.
We’ve tried it ourselves
And FAILED
Time and time again.
We’ve tried
To save ourselves
With our money
Power
Fame
Reputations…
But still,
This empty place
In my heart
Reminds me that
Only God
Will ever be enough.
God says love me
And I will be faithful
To you for the next
One thousand generations.
I don’t know what will happen
Ten years from now.
But, God is talking about
Ten times one hundred
God is
Amazing!
Who else
Can I trust?
Everyone else has
Forsaken
Abandoned
Or betrayed me
At one time
Or another.
God has never done
Any of that.
God has
Never left me
Never forsaken me
Has always stood by me
Has loved me
Even when I did not
Love myself.
Oh!
Taste and see
That the Lord is
Good.
Try God.
Know God.
Trust God.
Believe God.
It will change your
Forever after
Life.
I’m talking
Eternal life.
If you
Only
BELIEVE…
This spoken WORD was inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
Deuteronomy 7:1-11 (NRSV)
Keeping God's commandments
When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter and occupy, and he clears away many nations before you - the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations mightier and more numerous than you - and when the Lord your God gives them over to you and you defeat them, then you must utterly destroy them. Make no covenant with them and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, for that would turn away your children from following me, to serve other gods. Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly. But this is how you must deal with them: break down their altars, smash their pillars, hew down their sacred poles, and burn their idols with fire. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
It was not because you were more numerous than any other people that the Lord set his heart on you and chose you - for you were the fewest of all peoples. It was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath that he swore to your ancestors, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, and who repays in their own person those who reject him. He does not delay but repays in their own person those who reject him. Therefore, observe diligently the commandment - the statutes, and the ordinances - that I am commanding you today.

I HAVE CALLED YOU FRIEND
So I love you too
Want you to live free
To do what I do
To be full of joy
Abide in our way
And never be destroyed
By the drama of the day
All you really need
Is a heart full of love
To Know that I plead
For you up above
You are my friend
And never my slave
With me to the end
That’s why I freely gave
My life for you
Up upon the cross
Will you be ever true
Not counting the cost
Of serving me now
And forever more
I’ll show you how
To live better than before
I am your friend
Bringing joy and peace
With you til the end
My love will never cease.
No more dark night
My friend that is over
Step into the light
Embrace your makeover
We’ll start afresh
Forget all that’s history
Conquer the flesh
March on to victory!
This rhyme is inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
John 15:9-17 (NRSV)
Christ, the friend and lover
As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

FRIEND
I don’t comprehend
How the King of all
Calls himself friend
To the least and the small
He coulda come demanding
A title with grand standing
He could come insisting
Overcoming pre-existing
Leaders, Kings, tyrants and mayors
He coulda played them all
Making them supporting players
In his drama to be known
To be set up on a throne
Could have taken nasty tone
With people all his own
But he didn’t go there
Instead he chose to care
Didn’t try to scare
But to love and to bare
His heart and mind
His care and grace
He was ever kind
Willing to embrace
To serve and to share
To live and to die
To answer all our prayers
And never turn a blind eye
To our trouble and our sin
Our need for a savior
He died and rose again
To redeem our behavior
Making us God’s friend
He paved the way
To life that never ends
That’s why I praise him today
And for eternity
He will ever be
More than life to me
I hope you agree
He’s Alpha
Omega
Beginning and End
Savior
Lord
Redeemer
And Friend.
This rhyme was inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
Mark 10:42-45 (NRSV)
Jesus came to serve
So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."

EXCITED ABOUT...LOVE
God’s people
Who are tryin’
To do something
About racism in
The world
And
In the church.
I know that
God
is not partial
To any people
From any nation.
Somebody told me
that GOD so loved
THE WORLD
That GOD
gave Jesus!
But, I gotta
Tell you the truth…
Sometimes I can’t tell
That God loves everyone
By lookin’ in the
Sanctuary on Sunday
At the folks assembled for worship.
It seems God loves rich folk.
Or God loves white folk.
Or God loves suburban folk.
Where is the Gospel
For me?
I am so glad
that some folks
Remember--
And believe
That the Sum of the Law
Is this…
Love the LORD your GOD
With all your
Heart
Mind
Soul
And Strength
And love your
NEIGHBOR
As YOURSELF.
I’m glad some folks
Are serious about
Going out to
ALL THE NATIONS
To baptize
And to teach
Somebody told me
It’s all about
JESUS
And that the GOSPEL
Is GOOD NEWS
For all
Of God’s people.
So, how can we say,
“God is love.”
When God’s people
Have failed so miserably
To love our neighbors
As ourselves?
Have mercy
On us, O God.
Excited about
CHRISTian folks
Tryin’ to be an example
Confessing racism
As the SIN
That it is
Repenting…
Turning…
Starting anew…
Working to make things right…
It’s going to be
An uphill battle
But, GOD
Is on
our side.
And LOVE
Always
Wins.
Now,
Ain’ta that
GOOD
NEWS?
This spoken word is inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
Acts 10:34-43 (NRSV)
God shows no partiality
Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

DON'T KNOW NOTHIN'
It seems to me
That we’re constantly
Judging each other
On things that don’t make no matter
Like the color of our skin
Or the paper in our wallets
The job that we have
or don’t have
or used to have
We say things like, “Where do you work?
Where did you go to college?
Where do you live?”
And we like to pretend
We know something
About the person we are grillin’
But the truth is
We don’t know nothing
About the condition of that person’s heart
Don’t know what they think
How they feel
What they do under the cover of night
Don’t know what joys
Or pains
Or treachery
Lie in wait
To be discovered
(Or not)
On the evening news.
Only God knows
The true state of a man
Or WOman
Only God knows if a person is
Clean or unclean.
And God says we can all be clean
If we bathe
In the blood
Of The Lamb.
Now,
hold up
That sounds real sick
But, it’s the only way
To be made right with God.
We gotta know The Son
Believe The Son
Confess The Son
Live The Son.
We gotta be sure that we believe
That Jesus died on the cross
Not because he had to
But because he wanted to
Because God loves us
And wants to spend forever with us
If we
can only
Believe.
So,
Stop thinkin’ you know
Anything about anything
About anyone.
God is the only righteous judge
So stop hatin’
And Start prayin’
First, make sure your own relationship is right
With God
You know what they say
In the event of an emergency
Secure your oxygen mask
First…
Once you’re sure
You’re going to make it into eternity
Share the love of God
With someone else.
After all
You cain’t take that
Fly car, job, house, or jewelry
With you.
So stop sweatin’ the small stuff
And focus on what is real
On what will last
For eternity.
His Name
Is JESUS.
This poem was inspired by the following scripture in the Holy Bible:
Acts 10:1-34 (NRSV)
Peter and Cornelius
In Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Italian Cohort, as it was called. He was a devout man who feared God with all his household; he gave alms generously to the people and prayed constantly to God. One afternoon at about three o'clock he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius." He stared at him in terror and said, "What is it, Lord?" He answered, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. Now send men to Joppa for a certain Simon who is called Peter; he is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside." When the angel who spoke to him had left, he called two of his slaves and a devout soldier from the ranks of those who served him, and after telling them everything, he sent them to Joppa.
About noon the next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat; and while it was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw the heaven opened and something like a large sheet coming down, being lowered to the ground by its four corners. In it were all kinds of four-footed creatures and reptiles and birds of the air. Then he heard a voice saying, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat." But Peter said, "By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is profane or unclean." The voice said to him again, a second time, "What God has made clean, you must not call profane." This happened three times, and the thing was suddenly taken up to heaven.
Now while Peter was greatly puzzled about what to make of the vision that he had seen, suddenly the men sent by Cornelius appeared. They were asking for Simon's house and were standing by the gate. They called out to ask whether Simon, who was called Peter, was staying there. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Look, three men are searching for you. Now get up, go down, and go with them without hesitation; for I have sent them." So Peter went down to the men and said, "I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming?" They answered, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say." So Peter invited them in and gave them lodging.
The next day he got up and went with them, and some of the believers from Joppa accompanied him. The following day they came to Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. On Peter's arrival Cornelius met him, and falling at his feet, worshiped him. But Peter made him get up, saying, "Stand up; I am only a mortal." And as he talked with him, he went in and found that many had assembled; and he said to them, "You yourselves know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or to visit a Gentile; but God has shown me that I should not call anyone profane or unclean. So when I was sent for, I came without objection. Now may I ask why you sent for me?"
Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, at three o'clock, I was praying in my house when suddenly a man in dazzling clothes stood before me. He said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon, who is called Peter; he is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.' Therefore I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. So now all of us are here in the presence of God to listen to all that the Lord has commanded you to say."
Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality…
